How to Deal With Stress

Practical Steps To Deal with Stress

What is fear? Fear is worry, projecting fear, anxiety, stress, concern, dismay, distress, dread, panic, phobias, etc. It can be worry at the job, worry over finances, worry over your children, and it can be stress which is internal by some expectation you put on yourself or by others and you are trying to perform to meet their expecations.  This is a fear of man, fear of failure, fear of rejection if you do not do a good job and many other types of fear. More symptoms of fear…

Some of the symptoms of fear or manifestations of fear:

  • cold hands,
  • cold sweat,
  • jitters,
  • trembling,
  • quivering,
  • shaking,
  • throbbing heart,
  • palpitations,
  • cold feet,
  • tension in the neck or soreness,
  • leg cramps,
  • racy mind,
  • confused thinking when overwhelmed with life.

How to deal with Stress

1. Make a decision (resist) and speak it out to God that you don’t want fear in your life any more. You need to make a bold declaration to the Lord. I do not accept the fear in your life any more.

2. Ask god for discernment how fear is impacting your life. Find out where fear entered in your life.

  • Did you have a traumatic event such as car wreck, etc.
  • Suffer from betrayal from someone, etc.
  • Did someone shame you in front of others!

3. Repent to God for specifically to each way you have given into fear and not trusted Him and not believed in His Word. You have to do that when fear is present. That means when you are having a panic attack or struggling to fear, repent to fear because fear is a sin because it is opposite to God because everything about God is faith. Fear is a spirit according to 2 Timothy 1:72 Timothy 1:7
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

WP-Bible plugin
“He did not give us a spirit of fear but of sound mind…

4. Ask god to forgive you for these sins or fears you have entertained and to work in your heart so that you can truly trust and believe God and be free from fear.

5. If someone betrayed you or shamed you, then forgive them.

5. Walk in this every day. How do you break old habits? You are developing new habits by doing this daily until you have God as your faith instead of being ruled by fear and anxiety. That means ask God to deliver you from this spirit of fear.

6. When fear tries to come, quote the word at it or at the enemy. 2 Timothy 1:72 Timothy 1:7
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

WP-Bible plugin
for God has not given me a spirit of fear but of a sound mind. The word is a spiritual weapon. Ask the Lord to help you to believe his word as truth and will not believe what fear is saying to you any more. Look up the promises of God in scripture to combat fear.

7. Find a ministry that understands deliverance that is able to work and bring you to freedom. Especially if a person has had trauma. Trauma brings in fear that can grip so look for a ministry that will deal with the spirit of fear.

Every time we feel fear rising up in you, you have to decide what you are going to believe. When you believe in God’s word which declares repeatedly that when you trust God and believe Him, He will protect and care for you and save you from all of your trouble or anxiety. Or will we believe the fear that speaks against the word of God?

This is a part you play to get fear defeated in your life. You have to continually choose that you will believe God no matter what things might look like to you in your natural eyes or seem like to your natural mind. Then, you will have a living faith in the word of god to come to past in your lives.

Fear of Man Brings a Snare

Behind Fear of Man is a Spirit of Fear of Rejection

Did you know fear of man robs your destiny and your identity?  Why, because that fear of man is really a need for acceptance and that person will do anything to find acceptance by avoiding confrontation or not having your own voice or opinion to keep peace at all cost.  You will even conform to be more like them without realizing the bondage fear of rejection.
God loves you and made you a certain way but somewhere when growing up you felt unacceptable.  He wants you to know who you are through His Word.  When you know who you are and have peace, then that spirit of fear of man and fear of rejection, will not affect you.  Why, because their opinion will not matter, when you make God the center of your life instead of man.  You will have peace that if man does not agree, it is their problem if you are secure with the Lord.
God has a calling on your life! Are you going to let the enemy rob you? Did you know if man does reject your opinion, that it is not the end of the world?
That Spirit of Fear keeps you from walking in your gifts that were naturally and supernaturally In you.  When you realize you are in bondage, you realize you could have done more for the Lord.

Peter walked with Jesus all that time, seeing miracle after miracle and yet at the end he denied Christ. He had fear of man that caused him to deny Christ and fear of rejection from pear pressure.  Later he went on to do Great things. Doing what God calls us too does not necessarily mean its a Full Time Ministry position.

So when you study Fear, Stress and Physiology and learn how Fear and Trauma robs you of so very much of His Joy in this life! You get excited at Knowing that God is waiting for the Truth in His word, to override what the enemy has meant for evil! That you can now walk in complete wholeness- His Peace. (nothing missing, nothing broken) That is the Good News! Selah

Then you will:

overcoming fear anxiety

overcome phobia

Overcome fear of man

Overcome fear of rejection

Fear Not, Nor Be Dismayed

2 Chron. 20:15-172 Chron. 20:15-17
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

15 And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's. 16 To morrow go ye down against them: behold, they come up by the cliff of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the brook, before the wilderness of Jeruel. cliff: Heb. ascent brook: or, valley 17 Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to morrow go out against them: for the LORD will be with you.

A time of distress for Israel when her enemies, Ammon and Moab stood up against Israel encamped in En-gedi. He became afraid and set himself to seek the Lord, proclaiming a fast and a general convocation throughout all Judah.
A lesson to learn to turn to the Lord when you have adversaries coming against you or speaking against you either in the work place or any other place or through your husband, relatives, friends, ministries, etc..

King Jehoshaphat exhorts Judah to have faith in God.

What does he do next to deal with fear?

1. Fast
2. Prayer
3. Praise and Worship

What did he do next? To pray

The prayer was:

1. You are the God of our fathers
2. You are the God of heaven
3. You rule over all the kingdoms of the heathens
4. You have all power and might
5. None is able to withstand You
6. You are our God
7. You drove the Canaanites out before Israel
8. You gave their land to the seed of Your eternal friend, Abraham
9. They have dwelled there
10. They have built You a sanctuary for Your name
11. They have told us that when we are in trouble to stand before this house, in Your presence, crying to You in our affliction, You will hear and help.
12. And now, the Ammonites, Moabites, and Edomites are come to cast us out of our possession (your boss, evil people, evil family, evil workers, evil co-workers, evil friends)
13. You will not judge them
14. We have no might against such a company (3 companies – Moab, Ammon and Edomites)
15. We do not know what to do
16. Our eyes are upon You. It is getting our eyes off the situation but onto Christ with blind trust that He will see you through your situation (job, finances, children, bills, etc.)

Jehosphaphat believed the Lord and bowed his head to the ground, and all Judah fell before the Lord in worship. They worshipped his character, the promise and deliverance.

We can put our trust in the Lord. He cares for us and cares about every detail for our lives. When we get our eyes off of the circumstances onto Him, it releases the Lord to move mightely. The Lord sent confusion in the camp.

Vs. 20-21 “And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa; and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe int he Lord your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper. And when he had sonsulted with the people, he appointed Singers unto the LORD, and that should Praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army,a nd to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever.”

The appointment of singers to lead the army into battle must have been in divine will, for as soon as they began to sing and praise God, God sent ambushes against the Moabites, Ammonites and Edomites and they were smitten. God must have sent angels and the enemy became confused and they began to destroy each other. This is a miraculous happening that, I’m sure, will take place at the battle of Armageddon.

vs. 22 And when they begain to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Sear, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.

The Lesson in this story is trust God, get your eyes off the situation, praise God in your situation. What I mean praise, praise like the victory has already taken place with confidence and with faith.

Hebrews 11:1Hebrews 11:1
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

says “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” It is knowing, even though you cannot see it, that God is working it out for you. His ways are eternal and our circumstances are temporal. So, praise the Lord, even if you don’t see evidence, that he is working on your behalf. You see in 1 Peter 5:71 Peter 5:7
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

WP-Bible plugin
it says to cast our cares to Him because he cares. Jesus Christ cares about every detail of your life.

Another promise and character of God is “If God is for us, who can be against us.” (Romans 8:31Romans 8:31
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

This verse teaches us that God is for us! What a glorious thought. “For us” is the glorious principle of God’s attitude and activity toward us. This is manifested through His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Dealing With Traumatic Events

Coping With Trauma

Have you ever been in a traumatic event and the next day feel nervousness and won’t seem to shake!  For example, been in car wreck and nervous to drive the car and the feeling does not seem to go away for days.
Trauma opens the doorpoint to a spirit of fear!
It is necessary to close the doorpoint from trauma.
More explanation of Doorpoint: A place where the enemy has had access
to you. It is a “safe” place that the enemy has found in your life.  It finds rest in you but you are in torment, anxiety, stress, uneasiness, intrusive thoguhts, etc.
It can come in at conception!  An example is you, as a person, came about through rape.Dealing with Trauma:
Below is a trauma list to help you remember any areas to close the doorpoint.
1. Write on a sheet a paper on one side your traumas you remember
2. List people involved and if there is any unforgiveness
3. List reactions to these incidences. For example: fear, anger, hatred, self-hatred, feelings of abaondonment, self-rejection, anxiety, stress, insomnia, OCD, etc.

What to do next:

1.  If people involved work through unforgiveness.
2.  Do the trauma prayer.

Then use the trauma prayer below to allow God to remove the effects
of that trauma from your life and to heal the damage that it has
done in your heart. Remember, I will be teaching on trauma and then
ministering trauma.

God Has Not Given Us a Spirit of Fear

A spirit of Fear is the Opposite of Faith

WHAT IT IS DOING TO YOUR BODY!

I’m going to start out and say that Fear is a sin. Why do I say this? One, Fear is the opposite of faith. Also the Bible says “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” Hebrews 11:6Hebrews 11:6
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

.

If you are manifesting fear over some situation, then confess it to the Lord through repentance.  There are over 4000 types of fear according to the medical community.

* Goals: Recognize the damage that fear does to you physically, emotionally and spiritually to your body, soul and spirit.

* Fear comes from not having a right relationship with God, self or others.

* Reveal what will defeat fear in our lives Participate in a ministry session for deliverance of fear A.

What is Fear? Fear: fear is stress, fear is anxiety, fear is worry, being afraid, scared, worried, anxious, concerned that a bad thing is going to happen. Fear projects into the future. A spirit of fear robs you of your peace and joy.  Fear comes in two forms:

1. Fight or flight. The Hypothalamus doesn’t know the difference between these two types of fear. Our bodies were not designed to live in continual ongoing fear. We are to live in peace with our Heavenly Father. If we do not know how to live in peace, then fear can cause many problems in our health and well being.

2. Fear is a Spiritual Problem - Fear is not an emotional problem; fear is a spiritual problem. The Bible identifies fear as a spirit in 2 Timothy 1:72 Timothy 1:7
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

The Bible is saying that the spirit of fear can have manifestations that did not come from God.

God tells us over and over not to fear. We can put our trust in Him.

“8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. 9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.”

We are all going to deal with fear, or worry, some time in our lives.  It is what we do with it that matters.

Reasons fear entered in:

1.  Everyday life our jobs, children, finances, husbands, relationships, to meet someone’s expectations, deadlines, etc.

2. Broken heart

3. Trauma

4. Abandonment through divorce, etc.

5. Betrayal

6. Someone else’s sin (sexual abuse of all kinds)

7. Bitterness (separation in 3 areas – self, others or God). Is there someone you cannot forgive? Unforgiveness is a big reason why people do not get healed because it is against God’s Word.

Read Philippines 4:6es 4:6

Again Fear is Sin – Anything that is not of faith is sin. Why, because it is the opposite of God’s character. It is a lack of faith in Him to meet our needs. It is a spirit of doubt and unbelief. Fear drives and faith leads. If you are not being lead, then you are probably in fear. If you are driven to perfection and cannot rest, then there is a spirit of fear operating. That also means you are being driven by fear and not lead by faith.

How To Overcome Stress

Romans 14:23Romans 14:23
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin. doubteth: or, discerneth and putteth a difference between meats damned: or, condemned, or liable to punishment

WP-Bible plugin
– Fear and Faith are alike in this dimension: Both project into the future and Both demand to be fulfilled. Faith projects good into the future and Fear projects bad into the future.

“23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.”

Fear Can Be Defeated

God = Power, Love, Sound Mind Power = Holy Spirit Love = The Father Sound Mind = The Word of God Our Relationship with the Godhead can defeat The Spirit of Fear.

God’s word says 365 times to “Fear Not”.  God knew mankind was going to wrestle with fear.

Expresions of Spirit of Fear

Fear is expressed in a lot of ways… You may say, “I just don’t have enough faith” Romans 12:3Romans 12:3
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. soberly: Gr. to sobriety

We many times look at our circumstances in front of us because fear is so very connected to our senses of what we hear, see, feel, taste, etc. You have to look beyond what is happening in front of you. The things in front of you are not eternal (and are temporary situations) but the things you cannot see are eternal (forever). You have to trust in the Word of God and stand on the word of God. Learn to cast down fear according to 2 Corinthians 10:52 Corinthians 10:5
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; imaginations: or, reasonings

WP-Bible plugin
. You have the authority!

If you have hope you have all the faith you will ever need.  Fear is walking in the flesh and faith is walking in the spirit.  You have to choose life and trust God to take care of your situations.

How To Overcome Worry

1 Peter 5:71 Peter 5:7
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

WP-Bible plugin
says “7Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”  Jesus truly cares about every detail of your life.  You have to cast your problems you have no control of to Him.  That sometimes is the spiritual fight to keep it with Him.  How many times have you given it to Him, and 10 minutes later you are thinking about the situation again.  That is the war of continually deciding to leave it with Him.

Some of you will say “Am I suppose to pray”.  Yes, but give the burden to the Lord.  Jesus is our yoke.

he words of Jesus in Matthew 11:28-29Matthew 11:28-29
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

WP-Bible plugin
address this very issue.  “Come
to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.   Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Again, this scripture indicates Jesus wants to cast our heavy burdens to Him.  He wants to give us rest.  Rest is abiding in Him in all situations of life.

That is why I said it is important to renew your mind. We can remove the spirit of fear, but you have to create new means or new protein synthesis with the Word of God. You have to make a decision (resist) and speak it out to God through meditation of the Word that you don’t want fear in your life any more. You need to make a bold declaration to the Lord. When a specific fear is coming on you, you say “I don’t accept this fear in my life any more” and then Cast Your Cares To Him...”  Trust that He will work it out.

We are overcoming the spirit of fear.  When you cast your cares to him, he is able and activated to work it out for you.  Matthew 21:21Matthew 21:21
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

21 Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.

What Happens To Us When We Are Under Excessive Stress?

When we experience excessive stress – whether from internal worry or external circumstance – a bodily reaction is triggered, called the “fight or flight” response. This response is hard-wired into our brains and represents a genetic wisdom designed to protect us from bodily harm. This response actually corresponds to an area of our brain called the hypothalamus, which – when stimulated – initiates a sequence of nerve cell firing and chemical release that prepares our body for running or fighting. The hypothalamus works to keep your body in homeostasis.

What are the signs that our fight or flight response has been stimulated? When our flight or flight response is activated, sequences of nerve cell firing occur and chemicals like adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol are released into our bloodstream. These releases cause our body to undergo a series of very dramatic changes. Our respiratory rate increases, blood is shunted away from our digestive tract and directed into our muscles and limbs, which require extra energy and fuel for running or fighting. Many other things occur as well. This is a God given protective mechanism. When the threat is over, our bodies return to normal. When too long, it starts to destroy the body.

Your body is made up of several systems working together.

The Endocrine System

The Hypothalamus is called the brain of the endocrine system. It is located in the third ventricle. When the back of your head hurts from tension, this is where you rub your neck. It is the facilitator for many things.

An EI reaction is a direct result of a combination of hormones being secreted by the Hypothalamus, and the central nervous system being activated by fear, anxiety and stress.

When you are continually geared up to fight to flight stressor, there are all kinds of things happening inside your body. Science calls it the mind/body connection. We call it the spirit, soul and body connection.

To be at Homeostasis. The integration of the balance of all body functions to stay at Homeostasis,

1. Obey God’s commandments

2. Love God

3. Love yourself

4. Love your neighbor

The Limbic System

The limbic system is the connection between your cerebrum, where your brain is, down through to your hypothalamus. It is the connection between the psyche (thought) and the physio (body).

God is interested in not only your spirit that will go to heaven one day, but also in your day-to-day survival. Psychology teaches that there is a conscious and a collective unconscious part of the soul.

1 Thessalonians 5:231 Thessalonians 5:23
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

WP-Bible plugin
“And the very God of peace santify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blaemeless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ”

The hypothalamus is called the “brain” of the endocrine system, but it is not a brain. It is a gland, which is a facilitator and originator of the following life circumstances; fear, anxiety, stress, tension, panic, panic attacks, phobia, rage, anger and aggression.

John 14:27John 14:27
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

WP-Bible plugin
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you; not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

The limbic system functions in the emotional aspects of behavior related to survival. When you do not feel loved or secure, or have been victimized, you fight for survival. The limbic system also functions in memory and controls most of the involuntary aspects of the entire nervous system.

General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS)

Homeostasis may be viewed as a specific response by the body to specific stimuli. Its mechanisms “fine tune” the body, and if successful, or environment maintains a uniform chemistry, temperature, and pressure. However, if stress is extreme or unusual, the stress triggers a wide-range set of bodily changes called GAS.

GAS does not maintain a constant internal environment. In fact, it does just the opposite. The purpose of these changes is to gear up the body to meet emergencies, known as stressors.

A stressor is anything that causes fear in your life. Fear and anxiety are affecting your body behind the scenes, and you don’t even see it happening.

Cortisol

Cortisol is a very important hormone in the body in fight or flight. However, the long-term, over-secretion of cortisol destroys your immune system, and according to the medical community has direct physiological effects on a lot of bodily functions (you can read about this on page 152 of AMEW).

English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones. like: or, to

WP-Bible plugin
“A merry heart doeth good like a medicine; but a broken spirit drieth the bones.”

When this happens, this can adversely affect the immune response, among other somatic conditions. It is thought that 50-80% of all diseases are a result of excessive stress. Stress involves the dynamic interaction of the body and mind- brain and behavior.

Examples of these stress-induced changes included the following:

1. Enlargement of the adrenal cortex, a gland that produces stress hormones.

2. Constant release of stress hormones; corticosteroids released from the adrenal cortex.

3. Atrophy or shrinkage of lymphatic glands (thymus gland, spleen and lymph nodes).

4. A significant decrease in the white blood cell count. This effects the immune system.

5. Bleeding ulcerations of the stomach and colon.

6. Death to the organism.

Many of these changes were very subtle and often went unnoticed until permanent damage had occurred. He referred to these collective changes as the General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS), a process in which the body tries to accommodate the stress by adapting to it.

OUR CHOICE! Satan and his kingdom are standing by to bring about your FEAR God, the ruler of all things, is standing by to bring about your FAITH; based on your hope in His Word, His Truth and His Being Fear is not just a feeling…

WHAT CAN WE DO? We can start making faith statements and expecting what God’s Word says… How do we learn faith statements?

Practical steps to freedom from fear!

1. Make a decision (resist) and speak it out to God that you don’t want fear in your life any more. You need to make a bold declaration to the Lord. I do not accept the fear in your life any more.

2. Ask god for discernment how fear is impacting your life. Find out where fear entered in your life.

“He did not give us a spirit of fear but of sound mind…”

4. Ask god to forgive you for these sins or fears you have entertained and to work in your heart so that you can truly trust and believe God and be free from fear.

I break the programming and the old means (old memories) and ask you lord to create new memories and new means (protein synthesis) now in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

Childhood Trauma Linked to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Childhood Trauma Linked to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Posted on July 18, 2011 by Myers18

Individuals who experience trauma during childhood appear more likely to develop chronic fatigue syndrome as adults, according to a report in the January issue of Archives of General Psychiatry, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. In addition, neuroendocrine dysfunction — or abnormalities in the interaction between the nervous system and endocrine system — appears to be associated with childhood trauma in those with chronic fatigue syndrome, suggesting a biological pathway by which early experiences influence adult vulnerability to illness.

Chronic fatigue syndrome affects as many as 2.5 percent of U.S. adults, according to background information in the article. Little is known about the causes and development of the condition. Risk factors include female sex, genetic predisposition, certain personality traits and physical and emotional stress. “Stress in interaction with other risk factors likely triggers chronic fatigue syndrome symptoms through its effects on central nervous, neuroendocrine and immune systems, resulting in functional changes that lead to fatigue and associated symptoms such as sleep disruption, cognitive impairment and pain,” the authors write. “However, obviously not every individual exposed to a stressor goes on to develop chronic fatigue syndrome, and it is therefore of critical importance to understand sources of individual differences in vulnerability to the pathogenic effects of stress.”

Christine Heim, Ph.D., of Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, and colleagues studied 113 patients with chronic fatigue syndrome and 124 healthy individuals who served as controls. Participants — who were drawn from a general sample of 19,381 adult residents of Georgia — reported whether they had experienced childhood trauma, including sexual, physical and emotional abuse or emotional and physical neglect. They also underwent screening for depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder and were tested for levels of the hormone cortisol in their saliva. Low levels may indicate decreased function of the body’s main neuroendocrine stress response system, the authors note.

Individuals with chronic fatigue syndrome reported higher levels of childhood trauma — exposure to trauma was associated with a six-fold increase in the risk of having the condition. Sexual abuse, emotional abuse and emotional neglect were most closely associated with chronic fatigue syndrome. Patients with the syndrome also were more likely than controls to have depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Cortisol levels were decreased in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome who experienced childhood trauma, but not in those with chronic fatigue syndrome who had not been subjected to trauma. Therefore, stress early in life may cause a biological susceptibility to chronic fatigue syndrome, the authors note.

“Our results confirm childhood trauma as an important risk factor of chronic fatigue syndrome,” they write. “In addition, neuroendocrine dysfunction, a hallmark feature of chronic fatigue syndrome, appears to be associated with childhood trauma. This possibly reflects a biological correlate of vulnerability due to early developmental insults. Our findings are critical to inform pathophysiological research and to devise targets for the prevention of chronic fatigue syndrome.”
